The calculator below estimates paint volume for walls and, optionally, the ceiling. It uses typical coverage assumptions and subtracts approximate areas for doors and windows. It does not estimate labour, materials beyond paint or the total cost of a project.
Paint coverage guide
The original Sydney Elite Painters guide estimates 7 to 10 square metres per litre on previously painted surfaces, around 7 square metres per litre on new plasterboard and about 5 square metres per litre on new render.
Rough or porous surfaces can require more paint. First-time painting may need additional preparation and product. Check the coverage instructions on the paint manufacturer’s label and allow for the number of coats your surface requires.
